Mechanical Designer
Job description
Reporting to the Technical Lead, Engineering, the candidate will be responsible for the design of new chassis models, integration of brake control systems, integration of axles and suspensions, electrical systems and chassis handling equipment. In this role, the candidate will also be involved on creating stacking drawings for on-road transport of chassis. The candidate will also drive the Design for Manufacturing and Standardization initiative within the department.
Tasks
- Participates in contract review meetings and brainstorming sessions to obtain all the information required for the projects to be put into production.
- Creates 3D chassis designs and 2D deliverables using SolidWorks in compliance with QCD commitments, production rules and processes, technical norms and standards.
- Ability to define welding symbols in drawings in accordance with CSA W59 welding standards
- Releases Bill of Materials and drawings through the ERP system.
- Make corrections and perform revision control of 3D models and drawings and ensure that copies used in production are up to date.
- Analyzing and implementing change request impacts on assigned zone and applying change if request accepted.
- Collaborating with engineering and manufacturing teams to optimize the manufacturability of new products.
- Creating prototypes, testing them, and analyzing the test results.
- Providing shop floor support, as and when required, during the entire building process to ensure that the design specifications are met.
- Ensuring adherence to all safety and regulatory policies for the products designed.
- Determining the methods and sequence of operations in close discussion with the production and industrial teams and communicating the same to the production staff through the Engineering drawings.
- Carry out Design Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (DFMEA) with the designs.
Required qualifications
- Diploma in mechanical engineering or in Industrial design.
- A minimum of 6 years of experience in similar functions.
- Drawing experience in a manufacturing context.
- Experience in mechanically welded designs and sheet metal assembly designs.
Skills
- Possess good spatial representation faculties (2D and 3D).
- Excellent knowledge of 3D modeling software SolidWorks and AutoCAD (an asset) and IT tools (Word, Excel and Outlook), ERP (Genius).
- Knowledge of the various products and components that go into the manufacture of our trailer equipment.
- Excellent knowledge of electrical, mechanical and pneumatic concepts.
- Good knowledge of (GD&T) geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Good knowledge of trailer compliance with F/CMVSS standards and regulations.
- Thoroughness, precision and attention to detail in drawings must be very detailed and precise.
- Sense of observation, curiosity and ingenuity to participate in the design of Jigs.
- Bilingual (French & English).
