Maintenance Supervisor
Job description
The Maintenance Supervisor is responsible for leading the day-to-day maintenance operations within a unionized chassis manufacturing facility. The role ensures the safe, reliable, and cost-effective operation of production equipment and facility assets through effective planning, preventive maintenance, employee leadership, and collaboration with production and engineering teams. The Supervisor is accountable for equipment reliability, maintenance performance, labour relations within the department, and compliance with all safety and regulatory requirements. This position reports to the Vice-President, Operations.
Tasks
- Supervise, schedule, and coordinate the daily activities of the maintenance team, including preventive, predictive, and corrective maintenance on chassis production equipment (welding cells, robotics, presses, conveyors, paint/coating lines, overhead cranes, etc.).
- Assign work orders, prioritize breakdowns, and balance planned maintenance against production demands to minimize unplanned downtime.
- Develop, monitor, and continuously improve preventive and predictive maintenance programs to maximize equipment reliability and minimize production interruptions.
- Select, coordinate, supervise, and evaluate external maintenance contractors while ensuring compliance with company safety requirements.
- Administer the collective agreement consistently by managing attendance, overtime allocation, discipline, grievances, accommodation requests where applicable, and employee performance while maintaining positive labour relations.
- Ensure all maintenance work complies with company safety policies, CNESST regulations, and applicable legislation through regular inspections, safety observations, hazard assessments, and employee coaching.
- Monitor and improve equipment reliability through analysis of MTBF, MTTR, OEE, downtime trends, and maintenance KPIs, using data to identify opportunities for corrective action and continuous improvement.
- Manage the departmental maintenance operating budget within approved spending authority, including maintenance materials, contractor services, and inventory control.
- Lead root-cause investigations for recurring failures and identify equipment issues, implement corrective actions, and participate in Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives that support capital projects, equipment upgrades, and process improvements
- Coordinate with production supervisors, quality, and engineering to schedule shutdowns, changeovers, and equipment installations with minimal impact to output.
- Recruit, train, coach, and evaluate maintenance technicians; identify skills gaps and coordinate certifications (electrical, hydraulics, pneumatics, PLC, robotics).
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations related to lubricants, coolants, solvents, and hazardous waste disposal.
- May participate as management representative on the joint health & safety committee and in labour-management meetings.
Required qualifications
- DEC or DEP in industrial maintenance, electromechanics, mechanical/electrical engineering technology, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum five years of progressively responsible industrial maintenance experience, including at least two years leading or supervising maintenance employees in a manufacturing environment.
- Prior experience supervising in a unionized environment strongly preferred; working knowledge of collective agreement administration and grievance procedures.
- Automotive, heavy vehicle, or chassis/frame manufacturing background is a strong asset.
Skills
- Solid understanding of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems; PLC/robotics exposure an asset; familiarity with CMMS software.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both French and English, orally and in writing.
- Working knowledge of CNESST regulations, LOTO, and industrial health & safety standards.
- Strong leadership, conflict-resolution, and organizational skills; ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced production environment.
