Mechanical Engineer
Job description
We are looking for a versatile mechanical engineer, with a solid understanding of the fabrication of welded structures and metal parts, to join our team.
The ideal candidate must be comfortable working both at a computer and on the production floor. They must be able to transform an idea or manufacturing need into a functional, manufacturable, and well-documented design.
We are primarily looking for a resourceful, responsive and practical person, capable of analyzing design problems, proposing solutions and collaborating directly with production in order to quickly resolve technical issues.
Tasks
Mechanical design
- Design and modify mechanical parts, assemblies and structures
- Create designs using SolidWorks
- Produce detailed 3D models and manufacturing drawings
- Design taking into account the realities of manufacturing, assembly, welding and finishing
- Select the appropriate materials and thicknesses according to the project’s needs.
- Develop simple, robust, safe and economical manufacturing solutions
Steel structures and manufacturing
- Welded mechanical structures
- Steel profiles and plates
- Pieces laser cut
- Metal in leaf
- Sheet metal bending
- Machining and manufacturing of mechanical parts
- Assembly and welding
- Preparing parts for manufacturing
- Understanding the capabilities and limitations of manufacturing processes in order to design parts that are actually manufacturable
Drawings and tolerances
- Prepare complete and accurate technical drawings
- Define the appropriate dimensional and geometric tolerances
- Determine the functional tolerances necessary for the assembly and operation of the parts
- Apply good practices for dimensioning and drawing
- Apply the principles of dimensional and geometric tolerancing (GD&T)
- Use welding symbols correctly on drawings
- Define the requirements necessary for manufacturing and quality control
- Ensure that the drawings allow production to manufacture the parts correctly, without ambiguity.
Mechanical and structural analysis
- Perform finite element analysis (FEA) using SolidWorks or other appropriate tools.
- Understanding and analyzing structural constraints
- Evaluate deformations and displacements
- Analyze the security factors
- Evaluate problems related to the fatigue of materials and structures
- Identify critical areas of a design and propose improvements
- Validate designs through calculations, simulations, or testing when required.
- Perform mechanical calculations and validations to confirm the structural integrity of the designs.
- Interpret the results of analyses and formulate technical recommendations
- Evaluate potential failure modes and contribute to mitigating design risks
Production support and problem solving
- Respond quickly to technical problems encountered in production
- Going to the floor to understand the issues directly
- Analyze manufacturing or assembly problems
- Modify a design when necessary
- Finding practical and quick solutions to the problems encountered
- Collaborating with welders, assemblers, machinists, operators and production managers
- Conduct root cause analysis of technical problems and recommend corrective actions.
- Continuously improve designs to facilitate manufacturing and reduce costs
- Participate in improving manufacturing methods and existing products
Required qualifications
Training
- Baccalaureate in mechanical engineering
- Member of the Quebec Order of Engineers (OIQ)
Experience
- Relevant experience in mechanical design and/or metal fabrication
- Experience in the design of welded mechanical structures, industrial equipment or metal products (an asset)
- Experience in a manufacturing environment and in production support (an asset)
Skills
Technical skills
- Excellent command of 3D and 2D CAD (SolidWorks, Inventor , AutoCAD or equivalent)
- Good understanding of welded mechanical structures and knowledge of steel and its properties
- Good understanding of laser cutting, bending, welding and metal fabrication processes
- Ability to read, interpret and produce mechanical drawings
- Good knowledge of manufacturing tolerances and functional tolerances
- Knowledge of geometric tolerancing (GD&T)
- Good understanding of welding symbols and standards
- Knowledge of finite element analysis (FEA)
- Good understanding of stresses, deformations and fatigue phenomena
- Basic knowledge of electro-pneumatics ; ability to read electrical and pneumatic diagrams
- Ability to produce clear and complete manufacturing plans
